ARTIST STATEMENT
My art is a real or imagined representation of my observations, ideas, and feelings inspired by people, pets, nature, places, things, and stories created using wet and/or dry media.
I like that art can be planned, impulsive, structured, flexible, expressive, documentary, narrative, decorative, functional, educational—and therapeutic. When I was a child, I first discovered art could be a compelling distraction from the physical, mental, emotional, and/or social consequences of chronic illnesses related to allergies and migraine disease.
Today, I am happiest doing portraits that create visual stories capturing a person’s appearance, interests, belongings, mood, and, if possible, relationships. I am, also, inspired to make art about nature’s plants and colorful flowers, formations, and the creatures moving amongst them. I love illustrating characters, settings, and actions relevant to descriptions in stories, lyrics, quotes, poems, and other written or spoken materials. I am interested in travel, exploring new places, and the sense of adventure and imagination maps—particularly of Texas cities—represent while appearing as connected lines, shapes, and spaces open to an abstract interpretation.
I feel a satisfying sense of fun and accomplishment when I am able to express my personal imaginative style, experiment with different media (watercolor, acrylics, colored pencils, graphite, and pastels, clay, wax, computer software, ink)—on paper, wood, or canvas—and achieve a high level of creativity and craftsmanship in my art.
